Police Blotter: 11 Car Prowls Reported Wednesday

Police say all the break-ins took place in the Overlake neighborhood, and six happened in the same apartment complex.

responded to 11 car break-ins throughout the day Wednesday, after a thief or group of thieves hit several vehicles in the Overlake area sometime Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.

Police spokesman Jim Bove said the number of incidents is higher than normal but not unheard of. The typical monthly average of reported car prowls was 54 in 2010, he said, and only 30 incidents were reported this January.

“It’s been awhile since we’ve gotten hit that badly, (but) it’s not uncommon to have days like that,” Bove said.

Stolen items included GPS units, laptops, a wallet, digital camera, iPod and check book. A few non-valuable items, such as a gym bag and power cord were also stolen, said Bove, adding that it's always a good idea to remove any items that might make it seem like valuables could be present in the car, including GPS posts, electronic cords and backpacks.

The following incidents were reported between 6 a.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. Thursday:
