Mardi Gras Comes to Redmond

A round-up of events celebrating Fat Tuesday.

Mardi Gras often conjures up images of drinking, parades, dancing in the streets and overall revelry, New Orleans style.

But the night before Ash Wednesday actually finds roots deep in religious tradition. The phrase "Mardi Gras" translates literally from French to English as "Fat Tuesday," and refers to the partaking of rich, often fatty foods on the Tuesday before Lent begins, a last indulgence before the fasting of the Lenten season.

Traditionally, across multiple denominations of Christianity, pancakes and other fatty baked goods are consumed today because cooking them is a good way to use up foods such as butter, eggs and milk.
