Pet of the Week: Elroy the Jack Russell

Help this purebred find a home.

Elroy is an example of the many purebreds that end up in animal shelters homeless and in need. Unfortunately some dog owners buy a dog for the label "purebred" without realizing that a dog is a dog and they all need attention, training and patience.

Jack Russells are the type of breed that especially need to have their needs met. They have a lot of energy and without a dedicated owner who understands this type of dog, they often end up in animal shelters through no fault of their own.

Are you familiar with and love the Jack Russell breed? Is your day not complete without a five mile jog next to your canine buddy? Would an afternoon at the dog park be your type of perfect outing? If so, Elroy might be the ideal dog for you. Elroy is high energy and loves to play, especially with dogs bigger than himself. He is 2 years old, and has been neutered, microchipped and vaccinated.

Elroy needs that extra special dog person because he was run over by a car before being rescued. His kidneys were injured but you would never know it by his happy-go-lucky personality. Motley Zoo Rescue felt strongly that Elroy deserved to live out his life, so they brought him into their foster home network. Due to his kidneys, he might not live as long as a normal "Jack" but even 10 years vs. 14 years would make it worth it to have Elroy as a pet. According to his foster mom,  he has A LOT of life in him and you would never tell that he was in an accident.

MORE NOTES FROM ELROY'S FOSTER MOM:

Elroy is a goofy guy with a strong desire to run, play and receive attention. He is like many jacks: pretty high energy and will need lots of exercise and walks. He does pull a bit on the leash at first but if you give him some quick corrections, he will stop and walk as usual—but he is always eager when first starting out.

Elroy is bigger than some jacks, but still lap sized. He is good in his crate, but may whine initially just a bit until he settles in. He would love to have as much attention as you can give him, but he will lay down and settle in at your feet, too.

He likes to play with a bigger dog at his foster's house, but intimidates the smaller ones there—he would do well with one or two companions his size or bigger that he can run and play with.

Elroy would be great with active kids who are 10 years or older and would be best in a home without cats.

All dogs adopted from Motley Zoo come with a leash and either a Martingale collar or a harness, depending on each dog's particular needs.

Motley Zoo Rescue of Redmond is a 501(c) (3) non-profit animal rescue organization that is entirely run by volunteers. Motley Zoo Rescue does not have a shelter location, but instead houses all of its needy pets in foster homes.

Notes about adopting: All potential adopters fill out an application, are interviewed and have the opportunity to visit the dogs. Fees depend on the veterinarian care that has been given. All adoptable pets have vaccinations and are spayed, neutered, microchipped and flea-treated. All adopters get 30 days of free pet insurance and each dog comes with a leash, collar or harness.

Motley Zoo is always looking for foster homes. Fostering is a great way to "test out" your family to see if you are ready for a permanent pet.
