Sandy Hook Day of Remembrance Set for Saturday at Redmond City Hall

Redmond resident Larry Snyder said he felt compelled to organize a community gathering following last week's tragic shooting.

A Day of Remembrance and balloon release to honor the victims of the Sandy Hook School shooting will be held at 9 a.m. this Saturday, Dec. 22, at Redmond City Hall.

The event is being organized by Redmond resident Larry Snyder. It is not a city-sponsored event, but all are welcome to attend.

Like almost every parent, Redmond resident Snyder was deeply affected by the horrific event in Newtown, Conn.

“We have a 7 year old, and I think I saw my life pass before me that day,” he said.

In the wake of such a national tragedy, Snyder said he felt compelled to bring the Redmond community together to honor the victims and find an outlet for the range of emotions that have gripped the entire country over the last week.

“One of the solutions...one of the ways we as a community can heal, is to gather,” said Snyder, who lives near Idylwood Park and serves as co-captain of his neighborhood watch group.

He said those in attendance will read the names of each victim, and then release 26 balloons after singing "Amazing Grace." At least one city official is expected to speak at the event, Snyder said, and everyone will be invited to come to the microphone and talk “about how this particular tragedy has affected them."

Redmond City Hall is located at 15670 NE 85th St. For more information, contact Snyder at 206-407-7620.
