Angelina Jolie Announcement Sparks Interest in Redmond Show About Preventive Mastectomy

The world has been abuzz this week after learning that Actress/Director Angelina Jolie had a preventive mastectomy to avoid 87 percent odds of breast cancer due to the BRCA1 genetic mutation.

Redmond performer/composer Eva Moon, who also carries the gene, faced the same impossible choice. She's also written a solo musical about her experience and will perform the show Friday, May 17, at VALA Arts Center in Redmond.

"Angelina Jolie's bravery and openness about her experience will save lives," Moon said in a news release. "It's exactly what I hope for with my show, as well. I bet my breasts and ovaries to save my life - and lived to talk - and sing - about it."

Moon's "The Mutant Diaries: Unzipping My Genes" is described as a feisty, frank and fearless original musical comedy about turning a devastating prognosis into a new lease on life. Moon shares the humor as well as the struggle of dealing with a life-changing personal challenge.

Moon posted on her Facebook page:

"Yesterday, Angelina Jolie made BRCA a household word. It's been astonishing to see both the outpouring of support and the level of misinformation in response. My show goes far to advance the dialogue and people who are moved by her story would also be interested."

After learning she had the BRCA genetic mutation, Moon made the choice to undergo multiple prophylactic surgeries.
