Redmond Grad to Open for Macklemore in March

Redmond High School graduate and rap artist Sam Roberts may be getting his big break.

England-born Redmond High School graduate Sam Roberts may be getting his big break.

Now a student and rap artist at Northern Arizona University, Roberts embarked on an email and social media quest when he found out fellow Seattle-area rapper and musician Macklemore planned to play at the school March 9.

His goal? To be the opening act.

His efforts and those of his fans and friends paid off and Roberts will open at the now sold out March 9 show in Flagstaff, AZ.

"This opportunity to open for Macklemore and Ryan Lewis came with hard work, determination, and staying on top of my music," Roberts told Patch. He also thanked his fans for their help in tweeting and emailing the musicians on his Facebook page:

I am officially opening for Macklemore on 3/9 at NAU!!! thank you so much for your help making this dream possible ! you guys are awesome!!!!

Roberts started with music at a young age, first with the guitar, then drums and then tried his skills as a DJ. "After trying all of those I decided to sell my equipment and purchase a Mic, and studio equipment," he sad. "Writing is my passion now, and making music comes hand in hand with that."

RASP is a wonderful group of writers from all walks of Redmond life. They hold an open mic on theRead More last Friday of every month at the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center. Not only do they have featured readers like Kathleen, but the open mic portion encourages anyone from the community to read their work. It's regularly quite good. All those with a hunger to get their work out in the world should attend.
