This Summer, Party Like It’s 1376

Carnation’s Camlann Medieval Village is a living-history project that offers a glimpse of Chaucer’s England.

If you’re looking for a weekend day trip with a twist this summer, how about a bit of time travel? Camlann Medieval Village in Carnation may be one of the area’s best-kept secrets, even though it has been faithfully recreating life in a 14th-century English village for 32 years now.

The village’s restaurant, the Boar’s Head Inn, is open all year, and there are special events throughout the calendar, but summer is when the village really comes alive with knightly combat demonstrations, archery competitions, medieval music and other period performers, crafts, and hearty (and authentic) lunch fare from the Boar’s Head.

Camlann’s Summer Faire runs every Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. through Aug. 26. Camlann founder Roger Shell personally opens the village gates at noon, and visitors are free to wander the grounds and soak in a slice of living history. Admission (cash or check only) is $10 for adults, $6 for seniors and children 6-12 and free for children 5 and under. For an extra fee, guests can stay for an evening feast.

Camlann takes its history seriously, and strives for authenticity in everything from dining to entertainment to building methods – no Renaissance Fair fantasy here. For more on Camlann, including directions, check out its website

RASP is a wonderful group of writers from all walks of Redmond life. They hold an open mic on theRead More last Friday of every month at the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center. Not only do they have featured readers like Kathleen, but the open mic portion encourages anyone from the community to read their work. It's regularly quite good. All those with a hunger to get their work out in the world should attend.
