Is Microsoft So Retro It's Hip Again?

A fresh marketing effort and the ongoing PR woes of competitors like Google and Apple have helped the software company improve its coolness factor, according to a post on the Atlantic Wire.

Fashion isn't the only type of trend that's cyclical, according to a Tuesday post on the Atlantic Wire, a blog compiled by The Atlantic Monthly Magazine. 

Focusing on a new Microsoft marketing campaign that uses self-deprecating humor to compare Internet Explorer to comeback brands like Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, the Atlantic post asserts the Redmond-based company is "suddenly the hippest tech company around."

The Atlantic also argues that the PR woes of competitors like Google and Apple are helping seem better by comparison.

Part of this has to do with maturity, we suppose. An early bloomer, Microsoft's already went through its tech company growing pains. It used to be the evil one, remember? The one accused of monopolistic practices, of buying up the competition, of stifling innovation. But it's no longer the bully. Google and Apple's misdeeds have overshadowed the once dominant tech company, and while the other big players make public messes out of themselves, Microsoft looks to be cleaning up its image. And, we have to say, it looks good.
