Quick Action Saves Root Connection's Plants From Frost Damage

Wednesday night's temperatures dropped to 30 degrees in the Sammamish Valley. Root Connection owner Claire Thomas sent Patch pictures showing a frost-covered greenhouse Thursday morning.

Wednesday night's dip in temeratures could have been a disaster for Sammamish Valley farm  if owner Claire Thomas and staff had not worked quickly to cover tender tomato plants in the greenhouse.

"A farmer needs to be prepared for anything," Thomas said. "Whenever the forecast is for 42 degrees or below we worry, as we are in a frost pocket here where the air can be as much as 10 degrees colder than just across the highway. The good news is the tomatoes are OK, and all our field crops are covered when we plant them, so they'll be alright except maybe the bush beans, which are very sensitive to frost."

Thomas said according to her records "of 26 years of farming here, our latest recorded frost was May 30th, and our earliest fall frost was Labor Day."
