Redmond Patch Week in Review

Here's a recap of some of our top stories from the past seven days. Read on to make sure you didn't miss any of the week's news.

Monday: Patch contributor Jeanne Gustafson , an active community volunteer who can be found warming up the orchestra at Rockwell Elementary and bringing exciting speakers to Redmond High School. “I was raised that when you’re fortunate, you give back," he says.

Tuesday: State lawmakers Tuesday that will result in more than $5 million in education cuts for the Lake Washington School District during each of the next two years. School district officials said they're still determining how the cuts will be implemented.

Also on Tuesday, Redmond City Council members . The officials who attended the public safety committee meeting said they are pleased the number of citations has declined slightly over the past three months but are somewhat concerned at the ongoing frequency of the violations.

Wednesday: On Wednesday, officials with the Lake Washington School District to test all Lake Washington High School prom attendees for alcohol before admitting them to the dance and instead test only students who appear intoxicated. That policy will also apply to Redmond High School, which has been testing all students for alcohol at dances and other after-school events for several years.

Thursday: Redmond Mayor John Marchione condemning threatening notes directed at minorities and encouraged all residents to report any hateful messages to Redmond Police. Marchione's statement was in response to a threatening note that a Muslim woman found on her car Monday afternoon while she was inside the Bella Bottega Starbucks.

Also on Thursday, students at Dickinson and Explorer elementary schools  as Redmond firefighters dropped their parachute-protected eggs 90 feet from a fire engine ladder. The "Egg Drop Challenge" was intended to introduce students to the science that goes into helping a space shuttle return safely to earth.

Friday: Moms Talk columnist Malia Kawaguchi on the sweeter side of parenting with a reflection on how different "flavors" suit different families. Sometimes, Malia says, it's best to mix it up in a banana split sundae.

Saturday: Our , a new winery borne of Matthews Estate after its ownership switch. The winery is dedicated to using the highest quality of fruit, regardless of the cost.

Sunday: Fitness columnist Heidi Dietrich filled us in on . One of the most important strategies she found was using weights to slow down muscle loss.
