"Petals in the River" ceremony to honor loved ones lost

Redmond Historical Society invites community to "gather at the river" Memorial Day weekend

The Historical Societies of Bothell, Kenmore, Woodinville, and Redmond will hold their annual "Petals in the River" event on Sunday, May 25 at 1pm in each of their cities to honor friends, family, and community members who are no longer with us.

This is the Sunday before Memorial Day.

The Redmond Historical Society invites local residents to gather at the Leary Way Bridge at 1 pm. Bring wreaths, flowers, and baskets of petals to drop in the water.

This event has evolved over the last 15 years when the Bothell Museum started its Memorial Fund in memory of those who had died that year, and whose names were placed on their memorial board at the Bothell Museum at Bothell Landing. Some of the people on this board include relatives long gone, fallen soldiers who died in battle, pioneers and friends. This will be the first year for Kenmore, Woodinville, and Redmond to join in.

All members of the community are invited to bring a basket full of flowers and petals to drop into the Sammamish River to honor special people in their lives who have passed away. With each petal, there is a tribute to life; a memory.

It is quite a sight to see the river transformed into a carpet of flowers, floating gently downstream. The Sammamish River continues to play such an important role in all four of these communities; what a wonderful way for all to re-connect to each other and remember those who we love.

Everyone is welcome at 1:00 P.M. sharp, Sunday, May 25!
