Redmond Native's 'Jetlagged' Comic Series Lands Laughs From Frequent Fliers

Flight attendant Kelly Kincaid dabbled in drawing since childhood, but her job helped her find a topic that resonates with a wide audience.

Flight attendant Kelly Kincaid has always loved to draw.

Growing up in Redmond, Kincaid had a big poster on her bedroom wall, where she would add a drawing or message from each day to make an ever-changing collage. Many of her early drawings involved cats, but she would frequently incorporate whatever was going on in her life—including several cartoons about working as a lifeguard at the Redmond Pool.

“I can’t remember a time I wasn’t drawing," she said.

When the economy took a turn in 2008, Kincaid was furloughed and began to cartoon under the name K Squared Comics. But, without a theme, the cartoons didn't gain much traction, so Kincaid decided to follow the advice of a former instructor: “Write what you know.”

About a year after dedicated herself to that pursuit, Kincaid's Jetlagged Comic series is taking off—especially among those who work in the airline industry. Most of her cartoons focus on the daily life of a flight attendant, which includes many tight spaces and plenty of stress.

“I’m just trying to poke fun at the everyday stuff," said Kincaid, a 2002 Redmond High graduate who works for Alaska Airlines. "It resonates pretty well with other flight attendants.”

Although she enjoys flying, Kincaid said she'd like to one day be able to support herself fully with her art. She's working on a book and has thought about syndicating her comics.

In the meantime, though, Kincaid she finds plenty of personal fulfillment in giving her audience a chuckle.

“The biggest reason I want to do this is I want people to laugh," she said. "It does bring a lot of joy to people’s lives, and I love getting feedback from people.”
