38 Vehicle Prowls Reported in Eight Days: Redmond Police Blotter

A 32-year-old Seattle man was arrested early Monday morning in connection to at least 19 of the incidents, police said.

A man police believe to be responsible for at least 19 recent car prowls in Redmond was arrested early Monday morning in the Grass Lawn area.

In total, there were 38 vehicle prowls reported in the city between July 8 and 15, according to RPD spokesman Jim Bove. That number includes a string of boat prowls that happened over the weekend and are not believed to be connected to the arrested man, who is 32 and from Seattle. (Patch typically does not name arrested individuals who have yet to be charged with a crime.)

The car prowl suspect was apprehended after police received a call at around 4:40 a.m. Monday from a resident in the 14800 block of NE 64th St. The caller's daughter had heard breaking glass outside their home and alerted her parents to the noise.

An officer who responded to the scene saw a man sitting in a car and shuffling through the center console, Bove said. The man took off running when he noticed the officer approaching and at one point tried to jump into a vehicle that was driven by an unknown accomplice or accomplices.

The officer ultimately caught up with him, and—in an odd twist—the suspect swallowed some heroin just before he was arrested and had to be transported to the hospital for treatment.

Of the 38 prowls, Bove said 20 have involved unlocked vehicles. Items that were stolen include purses, laptops, wallets and other electronic equipment, although not every prowl resulted in something being stolen.

The crimes have not been restricted to any particular neighborhood, Bove said.

"Most of the ones that we believe were linked to (the arrested suspect) were mainly in that one area, but they’ve been scattered considerably,” he said.

Bove said people can help avoid becoming a car prowl victim by parking in well-lit areas, removing their valuables and calling police if they notice something suspicious.

"Be cautious of people going and looking in multiple cars," he said.
