Police Department to Close Substation at Redmond Town Center

The department will consolidate all of its public outreach programs into the main station on 160th Avenue Northeast.

The Redmond Police Department will close its later this week in an effort to consolidate resources, department spokesman Jim Bove announced in a community email on Wednesday.

The closure will take effect on Friday. All of the items and services that are currently provided at the substation—bike helmets, child ID kits, crime prevention materials and more—will be offered at on 160th Avenue Northeast from that point forward, Bove said.

The substation has existed at various locations in the shopping center since 1997 and saw an average of 15 visitors each week, Bove said in a phone interview on Wednesday. It has been primarily staffed by volunteers and open for about 12 hours each week.

“One of the main reasons (for the closure) is resources," Bove said. "It’s just not being utilized that much."

Bove also said the management company behind has decided to use the space for another use. The police department has been leasing the space from the town center at a deeply discounted rate, he said.

A call and email to a marketing manager who represents Redmond Town Center were not immediately returned Wednesday afternoon.

Bove said the police department will continue to occupy a small administrative space at the town center so officers can work within their district more easily. Like similar police facilities at a Redmond fire station and on the Microsoft campus, that space will not be open to the public, he said.

The Redmond Police Department's headquarters is located at 8701 160th Ave. NE. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
