Redmond Hires New Fire Chief

Tommy Smith, who has been serving as Interim Fire Chief in Colorado Springs since late April, is expected to take his position with Redmond Sept. 3.

The city of Redmond has hired Tommy Smith, a longtime Colorado Springs firefighter, to replace retired Chief Kevin Donnelly.

The city's communications department has confirmed that Mayor John Marchione selected a replacement for Donnelly, who stepped down in January of this year.

Smith has served on the Colorado Springs Fire Department since 1991 and has been a firefighter, paramedic, Lieutenant, Captain and Battalion Chief. As Interim Chief, Smith oversees Support Services which includes the Training Division, Medical Division, Division of the Fire Marshal, Fleet and Facilities, Human Resources, Public Communications and Community Education. Smith has a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Management in Human Resources.

Redmond Fire Department staff said they have already received calls from Colorado Springs media about the hire, and have issued this statement:

The City of Redmond is very pleased to hire Chief Tommy Smith. He will be an important contributor to my Directors’ Team. Chief Smith’s extensive experience at every level of the fire department made him an attractive candidate. Our interview and background research demonstrated that Chief Smith exemplifies our City values of Accountability, Integrity and Customer Service. The members of the Colorado Springs Fire Department spoke highly of Chief Smith’s leadership skills, particularly during the Waldo Canyon Fire. His combination of experience, values and leadership make him the ideal person to serve as Redmond’s next Fire Chief.

Chief Smith will start on Sept. 3rd with expected confirmation at the Council meeting that evening.
