Update: Condo Residents Displaced Until Wednesday After Kitchen Fire

The fire appears to have been caused by food that was left cooking unattended. No serious injuries were reported.

Update, July 30: Fire investigators confirmed that unattended cooking food was the cause of a Saturday condo fire that has left residents displaced until Wednesday, July 31.

The Red Cross has set up a shelter for those residents until the electrical system of the building can be rerouted around several damaged units, likely Wednesday, Redmond Police Resource Officer Julie Beard said.

Beard said the resident came back to the unit and found the fire and was unable to extinguish it. One person was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Original story:

Firefighters from Redmond and Kirkland extinguished a two-alarm blaze at a Grass Lawn condominium Saturday evening.

The fire broke out at around 7 p.m. in the 6700 block of 139th Ave NE in Redmond. Fire crews arrived to find the second-floor unit fully engulfed, with flames quickly spreading to the floor above.

Police and fire personnel evacuated the building, and two elderly women had to be carried from their units. One person suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

A total of 46 fire personnel battled the blaze for one hour. Officials say the fire caused severe damage to at least four condo units and smoke, water or fire damage to additional units.

The cause of the fire appears to be food that was left cooking unattended. Fire officials praised the use of a monitored fire alarm, saying it led to a fast response and helped prevent more significant damage or injuries.
