Redmond Police Launch Online Crime Map

Web feature enables residents to track crimes by type of incident, date and vicinity.

The has launched a new crime mapping feature on the city's website that enables viewers to track police activity by vicinity, date and type of crime.

The feature's information comes from filed police reports and includes only certain types of criminal activity, according to a city news release. Crimes such as sexual assault and domestic violence are excluded to protect the privacy rights and safety of victims, the release states.

Incidents that do not result in a new police report, such as witness or victim follow-up visits, are also excluded.

“We believe this service allows our community to be more aware and involved in crime prevention efforts,” Police Chief Ron Gibson stated in the release. “Many arrests are the result of citizen witnesses who are aware of suspicious activity in their neighborhood and report it immediately.

“While we want to be transparent to the types of crime we respond to and we want citizens to be more aware, it’s important to remember that Redmond is a safe city and the number of major crimes is not alarming,” Gibson said. “The safety of the city is due in large part to the community reporting suspicious activity and crimes as they occur. This tool will add another layer of awareness.”
