Redmond Police Plan Extra Enforcement for Back to School

The plans to use extra enforcement at the beginning of this school year to catch speeders and other law breakers in school zones.

The first day of school for students in the Lake Washington School District is Tuesday, Sept. 6.

The department will also activate the city's speed-enforcement camera on Northeast 116th Street near . The camera will be in use only when the speed zone beacons flash, which is generally from 8:35 to 8:55 a.m. and 3:25 to 3:40 p.m., with the exception of early dismissal on Wednesdays. On that day, the camera will be active from 1:55 to 2:15 p.m.

The police department is also reminding drivers that the speed limit in school zones is generally 20 mph when students are present. Fines for speeding in school zones begin at $189, with the exception of camera-enforced violation, which is $124.

Officers will also be making sure drivers stop when following a school bus with flashing red lights and stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. The fines for these two offenses are $394 and $124, respectively.

“Those traveling should always maintain safe driving habits, but especially in school zones where children may not be paying attention,” Traffic Lt. Nick Almquist said in a department news release. “We will work with school crossing guards and school administrators to ensure they are prepared for the coming academic year.”
