Redmond Police to Offer Women's Safety Class on Sept. 27

The instructional session will focus on crime prevention strategies.

The Redmond Police Department will hold a women's personal safety class at 6 p.m. on Sept. 27.

The class will take place at the RPD station, located at 8701 160th Ave. NE. The instruction will focus on crime prevention and will be proactive rather than reactive. Self-defense skills will not be taught.

Some of the featured topics include:

  • How to prevent becoming the victim of assault or robbery
  • Potentially dangerous situations and how to avoid them
  • How to handle "road rage" and prevent accidents
  • The pros and cons of weapons for personal security
  • How to make a safety plan

The class is suitable for women and girls who are 15 years old or older. To sign up, email Officer Michael Dowd at mdowd@redmond.gov.

If I was a woman this would offend me. Why not just have a personal safety class open to anyone who feels they would benefit from it? All of the featured topics mentioned above would apply to both men and women. rpd must feel women are weaker and more fragile than men.

I am a woman and this doesn't offend me a bit. I'm also not offended when my husband's testicular cancer support groups meets either...perhaps you should be offended by things that effect you directly and not make assumptions?

Whoa whoa Ann, I am not offended, just saying the issues being covered apply to both genders, and that women shouldn't be singled out as needing more instruction than men in the common sense category. Seems to me like all the bullet points above effect all citizens of Redmond, not just women. As far as your husband's cancer goes I hope he makes a full, permanent recovery.

I am also a woman. I took the class a few years ago. I am 5'9" and by no means 'weak', but a safety glass geared towards woman covers situations a woman might find herself in. For example: If she is with her child(ren) or high heels.. not that men are not with children or even in high heels, but there are certain differences/lifestyle situations that apply in higher probability to a certain gender. Certain items that women tend to carry on them that can be used for defense, versus certain items a testosterone driven lifeform might usually have on him. This class is geared towards woman and that's all... :-)
