Redmond Students Help Police Practice Demonstration Procedures

The group simulated a public protest and learned how the Redmond Police Department is trained to handle large-scale gatherings.

Approximately 90 students, teachers and parents teamed up with the on Sept. 15 to simulate a protest or demonstration and learn how the police are trained to interact with large groups of people.

The exercise was led by the police department's demonstration management team, which worked with the students to practice moving large groups of people in a peaceful manner. To simulate what might go on in a real demonstration, some students volunteered to role-play an injured person, while others tried to distract the officers by throwing ice and water bottles.

Students were instructed to “cease and desist” all activity if they were touched on the arm by an officer.
