UPDATE: Suspect Arrested in Oct. 25 Rape of 80-Year-Old Kirkland Woman

Kirkland Police say 26-year-old Moses Kelly was arrested Wednesday night in Redmond. He was booked into King County Jail early Thursday morning, with bail set at $1 million.

UPDATE, Dec. 27, 7 a.m.: Moses Kelly, the suspect in the Oct. 25 rape of an 80-year-old Juanita woman, is in custody after being arrested near a gas station in Redmond, Kirkland police are reporting. In a brief press release, the Kirkland Police Department reported that Kelly, a transient, was arrested on a felony warrant by Redmond police Wednesday night. King County Jail records show Kelly was booked there at 2:16 a.m. Thursday on a charge of first degree rape, with bail set at $1 million.

Original story:

Kirkland police have identified and are looking for a suspect in the Oct. 25 sexual assault of an 80-year-old Juanita woman, who was raped by a man who apparently followed her home from a nearby bus stop.

He is identified as 26-year-old Moses Kelly, a transient, and Kirkland police have obtained a felony warrant for his arrest. Kelly is considered dangerous and police are advising anyone who might see him to use caution and contact them as soon as possible.

“He got identified through DNA, so we’re trying to locate him now,” KPD spokesman Lt. Mike Murray said Wednesday.

Kelly is a black male, 5-foot-5, and between 120 and 130 pounds with a chipped front tooth, scars on his forearms, chest and back.

As Kirkland Patch reported on Oct. 30, the woman was approaching her home in the 9500 block of NE 128th Street after getting off of a bus nearby, when she was approached by the man. She attempted to close the door, say Kirkland police, but the man forced it open and shoved the woman to the floor.

The victim, who suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital, said the man put his hand to her mouth and began to choke her, and she believed he was trying to make her pass out. She fought with him as he began to pull her clothes off, asking him why he was doing it, and the suspect apparently told her he was homeless and had just ended a four-year relationship.

The suspect suffered a bite wound to the hand and left by unknown means.

Police Wednesday issued two photos of the suspect (attached to this story), who is known to use Metro and other public transit with previous contacts in Seattle, Woodinville, Federal Way, Bellingham, Mukilteo and Edmonds.

Kirkland police issued a sketch of the suspect (also attached) on Nov. 16. See that Kirkland Patch story here.

Police are asking anyone with any information on Kelly’s whereabouts to contact the Kirkland Police Tip Line at 425-587-3515 or email Det. Dave Quiggle at dquiggle@kirklandwa.gov.

Hi Joshua, If you feel police should stop and question people solely because they don't think they belong in that neighborhood, that sounds draconian to me. I am not a lawyer, but it sounds like it is probably illegal search and seizure. Juanita certainly wouldn't be the first community that did that, but it still doesn't sit well with me. If that's not what you are saying, please forgive me for reading too much into your comment! - Shaun

Hi Shaun, I was going along the lines of more neighborhood watch programs. If you see somebody that doesn't belong in your neighborhood and looks lost, maybe ask them what is going on? If people watched out a bit more in their neighborhoods they would find out that there are a lot of people tramping through looking to commit crimes.

I definitely agree with that, as long as people are polite and assume good intentions. It would suck to move into a neighborhood, or visit a friend in someone else's neighborhood, and have your first contact be a paranoid or hostile resident.

You guys know that is my boyfriend of 2 years right. He has hit given me 5 black eyes in the last year. But I do feel disapointed in for what he did. I do have feel what the victim is going through cuz I been there also even tho he is my boyfriend. Mostly I am mad at for not telling me about this. I found out this form his mom and his best friend who is my best friend and the police. I know why he did what he did. That is false he did not have a girl for 4 years and that they broke and that happened to him 4 years ago. Ever since that breakup he's been with me 2 years. You guys want to contact me here is my facebook name Indy Leenders.

I would agree with that Shaun, nobody wants unfriendly people. It just goes back to my original post though, there is no doubt that the types of crimes that take place in Lakewood I do not want coming to Juanita, and the real question is how do we prevent this from taking place?
