11 LWSD Students Place at State History Day Contest, Will Compete at National Level

National History Day regional finalists from Redmond High School, Redmond Middle School, and STEM will present their projects at a "meet & greet" on Tuesday, May 21 at Redmond City Hall.

Eleven students from Lake Washington School District placed at the state National History Day contest and will move on to the National History Day contest in June. 

The following students placed first or second at the state contest: 

Junior Individual Performance: McKenna Conlin (eighth grade), International Community School. "Margaret Sanger Fights for Reproductive Freedom: A Turning Point for Women," second place. 

Junior Group Website: Alicia Lee (eighth grade) and Sophia Michaels (eighth grade), International Community School. "The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater 1958: A Turning Point in Racial Integration," first place. 

Senior Individual Documentary: Carlisle Boyle (sophomore), Redmond High School. "HeLa: Tumor, Test Tube, Turning Point," second place. 

Senior Group Documentary:

  • Eric Burlingame (junior), Adarsh Karnati (freshman) and Samhita Karnati (junior), Redmond High School. "From Panic to Progress: The Launch of Sputnik," first place.
  • Kevin Nakahara (freshman), Anand Nambakam (freshman) and Ethan Perrin (freshman),STEM. "Nikola Tesla: Electrifying a New Era," second place.
Senior Individual Performance: Kiana Brett (sophomore), Lake Washington High School. "Painted Faces: The Rise of the Cosmetic Industry," first place.

National History Day regional finalists from Redmond High School, Redmond Middle School, and STEM will present their research and projects at a "meet & greet" on Tuesday, May 21 at Redmond City Hall. People are invited to stop by from 7-7:30 p.m. to meet the students and see their work. The Mayor and Council will also recognize the students' accomplishments at the beginning of their regular business meeting at 7:30pm.
