Creighton Concedes to Mitchell in Race to Challenge Hague

Richard E. Mitchell has 29 percent of the vote so far, with votes still being counted. Incumbent Jane Hague has 38 percent of the vote.

John Creighton, Seattle Port Commissioner and Kirkland resident, conceded to Richard Mitchell in the race to challenge incumbent King County Councilwoman Jane Hague in the fall.

In Tuesday's nonpartisan primary to represent King County Council District 6, the top two vote-getters will face off in the general election in November.

Since election night, the top two in the four-way race have been Hague, who has been in the seat since 1994, and Mitchell, a Mercer Island attorney and King County Housing Authority Commissioner.

"I congratulate the two primary victors," Creighton wrote on the blog for his campaign. "For the sake of the residents of District 6 and for the region, I would call upon each of them to move past the mudslinging and the smear campaigns that have unfortunately characterized the primary, and begin to focus on the issues that are critically important to the future of our region – how to get our economy back on the right track and how to protect our quality of life as the region’s population continues to grow."

Hague, who lives in Bellevue, has been in first place with 38 percent of the vote, a slightly smaller percentage than she had on Tuesday night with the first wave of ballots counted. While 625 votes separated Mitchell and Creighton Tuesday night, that gap widened as the county counted ballots turned in at election boxes Tuesday and that were mailed in.

Former Bellevue City Councilwoman Patsy Bonincontri was a distant fourth, with 7 percent of the votes.

King County Council District 6 includes Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Mercer Island, Medina, Clyde Hill, Hunts Point, Beaux Arts and Yarrow Point. The seat is nonpartisan.

The next update is expected Friday at 4:30 p.m. The results will be certified Aug. 31.
