Astronaut Dr. Bonnie Dunbar to Speak at Fundraiser for LW Schools Foundation

The Washington native and veteran of five NASA missions will give the keynote address April 20 at Juanita High School in Kirkland.

Dr. Bonnie Dunbar, a veteran astronaut of five space shuttle missions, will keynote the Lake Washington Schools Foundation’s annual “A Legacy for Learning” benefit luncheon April 20 at Kirkland’s .

Dubar, a native of Sunnyside, Wash., and a University of Washington engineering graduate, will talk about her passion for education, especially science, technology, engineering, and math — also known as STEM curriculum.

The luncheon is designed to raise funds for the foundation, which was founded in 2005 and has given about $750,000 to schools in the Lake Washington School District. Foundation programs include science enrichment grants, the volunteer mentoring program LINKS, the Access program to defer secondary school expenses for low-income students and CASS, a summer school for at-risk students.

Dunbar is a former president of Seattle’s Museum of Flight and is currently the executive director of Wings over Washington, an affiliate organization of the museum. She logged more than 1,200 hours in space on five NASA missions from 1985 to 1998.

The lunch is complimentary, but a $150 donation is requested. Last year, more than 500 members of the Kirkland, Redmond, Sammamish and Woodinville communities attended the event.
