New LWSD Test Scores Show Widespread Gains in Math

The district scored well above average in all areas of the 2011-2012 state assessment tests.

Students in the (LWSD) show significant gains in newly released state assessment test scores for math as well as steady reading scores in most grade levels.

The state's Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction released scores Wednesday for the Measures of Student Progress exam (used for grades 3-8) and the High School Proficiency Exam (used in grade 10).

The district's passing rates in math for 2011-2012 were up in every grade level over the previous year, with fifth- and seventh-graders showing gains of more than 6 percentage points. Some grade levels had slight declines in reading, but the passing rate for seventh-graders increased by more than 12 percent, from 74.6 percent in 2010-2011 to 87.3 percent in 2011-2012.

LWSD students also continued to outperform their peers at the state level—often by margins of 20 percentage points or more.

“Our staff and students worked hard to improve in math while maintaining or even improving on high standards in other subjects,” Superintendent Dr. Traci Pierce said in a district news release. “Our elementary teachers in particular have spent the last two years implementing a new math curriculum and we are now seeing gains in math performance.”
