RHS Spanish Club Reaches Out to Marines for Cultural Project

A group of Redmond High students teamed up with Spark Your Heart for a special project using their foreign language skills.

A group of students used their foreign language skills Wednesday to put the finishing touches on a cultural project that will benefit more than 150 U.S. Marines.

The RHS Spanish club, led by teachers Ashley Raji and Linda Shadley, teamed up with Spark Your Heart, a nonprofit organization started by senior , and AnySoldier.com to find a group of U.S. troops that would enjoy receiving supportive messages in Spanish. ( to read our earlier About Town column featuring Roels.)

On Wednesday, the students and teachers packed 14 support boxes full of magazines, snacks, toiletries and other essentials to send to the Marines, along with their specially designed letters.

The project involved approximately 50 students and will touch more than 150 troops, according to RHS parent Mary Lou Roels.
