RHS Teacher Receives National Environmental Education Award

Mike Town was one of 18 teachers nationwide to receive the 2012 Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators.

Redmond High School teacher Mike Town is among 18 teachers from around the country who recently received the 2012 Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators.

The White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) presents the award to "outstanding kindergarten through grade 12 teachers who employ innovative approaches to environmental education and use the environment as a context for learning for their students," according to the EPA website.

Winners receive a commemorative plaque and a $2,000 prize to use to further their professional development. The local school district also receives a $2,000 award to help fund environmental education programs.

The EPA cited Town's early commitment to teaching Advanced Placement Environmental Science as well as his ongoing innovation in curriculum development. He has worked with the Redmond Parks and Recreation Department to map ecosystems in the city and also developed a climate change awareness project called the Cool School Challenge, which has been adopted by hundreds of schools around the world.
