Redmond Football Falls Big to Woodinville

The Mustangs turned the ball over four times in the 55-7 loss.

Brett Arrivey threw three touchdown passes and Redmond turned the ball over four times in the first half in a 55-7 loss to Woodinville High School on Friday night at Pop Keeney Stadium in Bothell.

The Mustangs received the opening kickoff and, on their first play from scrimmage, fumbled the ball. That play pretty much set the tone for the rest of the night for Redmond.

The Mustangs' four turnovers all led to scores for Woodinville, as the Falcons took a 55-0 lead at halftime before pulling all of their starters in the second half.

After that first turnover, which led to a 13-yard touchdown pass from Arrivey to Beau Vintertun, Redmond put together its best drive of the first half, going 35 yards in seven plays before a Chris Schumacher field goal attempt sailed wide left. After that, it would be until the fourth quarter before the Mustangs had another sustained drive.

"The two turnovers in the first quarter were the ball game," Redmond head coach Jeff Chandler said. "We had a hard time recovering from that."

Woodinville took advantage of the young Redmond offense, going for strips of the ball every time a tackle was attempted. The Mustangs simply could not deal with the speed of the Falcon defense and turned the ball over four times in the first two quarters, two of which led to direct scores on a fumble and interception return.

"They've got such good speed and we make some mistakes here and there and they score," Chandler said.

Redmond finally got on the board late in the fourth quarter, on a 1-yard run by quarterback Brady Anderson. Anderson finished the game 9 of 15 for 117 yards, 94 of which came in the second half against the second-string Woodinville defense.

"Our defense has played real, real well ever since summer camp over at Eastern," Arrivey said. "I don't think we got scored on all of camp, and they brought it over into the season."

The loss was the third in a row to start the season for the Mustangs, who have been hampered by an inexperienced lineup and falling behind early in games. Redmond has been outscored 142-30 in its three games.

"It's about 11 guys doing their job, right now, and we've got about nine at a time and that's what you see," Chandler said.
