Andrea Uhlir is the animal issues contributor to Woodinville Patch, including the Pet of the Week column. She interrupted a career as an urban planner to embark on a decade of living overseas in London and Hong Kong. Inspired by a personal passion for writing and reading literature and history to appreciate other cultures, she volunteered as a full-time English tutor and literacy program manager in both countries. She formally re-trained to teach ESL writing and reading. She recently settled in Woodinville.

Growing up in Ohio, Andrea confounded her parents by successfully nurturing every imaginable species of plant or animal. Never limited to fostering conventional strays, her adoptions included a buffalo moth caterpillar that spun its cocoon on the dining room curtains before being released, and a one-legged pigeon chick fed a delicious grain and worm mash via an eye dropper until it could fly. Aquariums were filled not only with goldfish, but hundreds of African clawed frogs resulting from a breeding experiment (two of which survived for twelve years and accompanied Andrea to university). She currently owns five terrapins rescued from a Hong Kong fish market, as well as more than twenty frogs of various species and vocal capabilities. Rest assured, all are non-CITES listed and received a full-carapace pat-down from Homeland Security upon repatriation.
